Waupun, Wisconsin
City of Sculpture
Waupun, Wisconsin has one of the highest concentrations of public art per capita in the United States, thanks to Waupun Industrialist, Clarence Shaler (1860-1941),
a son of pioneer farmers. Six of the eight sculptures in Waupun, were donated by Clarence Shaler. Shaler also commissioned James Earle Fraser to cast
his End of the Trail statue as a gift to the City of Waupun. It took two years to complete, at a cost of $50,000, and was unveiled at its present site on June
23,1929, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites. Shaler was also responsible for the Recording Angel sculpture being presented as a gift to
Waupun, by one of America's foremost sculptors, Lorado Taft, in Chicago.
The meeting place will be at Jeff Raflik's house in Waupun. We will carpool/convoy around town (lead by Jeff), on a sunny Saturday or Sunday, to all the statues,
until everyone has all the pictures they want.
Here is an example of one particular statue, taken at several different angles....
